What Electricians and Buyers Should Know Before Ordering

Anyone sourcing flexible cable Ireland wide will know the choice isn’t as simple as it used to be. Between core counts, sheath types, and the sheer number of applications flexible cable gets used for, picking the wrong spec is an easy mistake to make and usually an expensive one to fix once it’s already installed. This guide covers what actually matters when buying flexible cable, plus where the cable tray fits into the same conversation, since the two are ordered together on most jobs.

What Is Flexible Cable and Where Is It Used?

A flexible cable consists of finer, stranded conductors instead of a single solid core, which provides it with the ability to bend and move. A flexible cable is the best possible option when there is a need for a cable that can be moved, coiled, or connected to equipment that is not fixed in place.

In reality, flexible cable is ideal for use with almost everything, like machinery in workshops, easily movable electric tools, power extension cords, washing machines, and any other location where conventional solid wires might be impractical.

Why It Is Important to Choose the Right Cable Type

Flexible cables are not the same, and they can be used in different situations. For example, cheaper flexible cable can work fine indoors; however, when exposed to adverse outdoor weather conditions, they may lose some of their functionality.

For Irish conditions specifically, that means paying attention to a few things before ordering:

  • Sheath type: rubber-sheathed cables generally outperform PVC in cold or wet environments, holding their flexibility rather than stiffening up.
  • Core count and rating: matched to the load, not just “close enough,” especially for anything running machinery or heavier equipment.
  • Certification: look for cable that meets recognized standards (BASEC, CE, or equivalent), particularly on commercial and industrial jobs where compliance gets checked.
  • Sheath color and marking matter more than people expect on larger sites, where mixed cable types need to be identified quickly and safely.

Buying flexible cable from a wholesale supplier rather than a general hardware shop usually solves most of this automatically, since trade suppliers stock cable built to spec rather than the cheapest option on the shelf.

Where Cable Tray Comes Into It

A flexible cable rarely gets installed on its own; on most commercial and industrial jobs, it’s routed through a cable tray, and getting that part right matters just as much as the cable itself. Cable tray Ireland-wide is used to support and organize cable runs safely, keep them clear of damage, and make future maintenance far easier than fishing cable through a wall cavity.

The right cable tray depends on the job. Basket trays suit lighter, more flexible runs and ventilated spaces. A solid-bottom tray offers more physical protection where cables are exposed to knocks or debris. Ladder tray is the standard choice for heavier industrial runs carrying multiple cables side by side. Getting the tray type, width, and load rating right at the planning stage avoids a reorder halfway through a job, which happens more often than it should.

Buying in Bulk or for a Live Job

For electricians, contractors, and site managers, ordering flexible cable and cable tray from the same supplier saves time and keeps specs consistent across a job. Clonegal Electrical stocks both as part of their wider electrical range, supplying trade buyers directly at wholesale pricing rather than retail markup, which matters when you’re ordering by the reel or the run rather than picking up a single length.

The Proper Cable and Tray, Sourced Properly

If it’s one reel of flexible cable or a full cable tray setup for a commercial fit-out, getting the specification right at the start saves time, money, and call-backs later on. Clonegal Electrical provides both flexible cable and cable trays at trade prices, with stock ready to go for electricians, contractors, and buyers throughout Ireland. Contact the team to check the current stock and pricing before you place your next order.

What Most People Get Wrong About LED Downlights in Irish Homes

Image
So, whether you’re working on building an extension, renovating a 90s bungalow, or updating your kitchen, downlights will probably be among the first things you choose for your ceiling. They provide even light and a clear-line appearance and create an instant modern feel in the room. Nonetheless, installing LED downlights in Ireland is not simply about choosing the most aesthetically pleasing fascia colour or making holes in the plasterboard. Between rigorous Irish construction regulations, fire safety requirements, and insulation bridging in cold lofts, making incorrect decisions can lead to drafts, sound leaks, or failing inspection of the building. Here is what you need to look for to ensure your ceiling lighting is safe, compliant, and built to last. 1. Fire-Rated vs. Standard Downlights When you cut a hole in a ceiling to install a downlight, you compromise the integrity of the plasterboard, which acts as a natural fire barrier between floors. Standard open-back downlights allow...

Why Emergency Lighting Still Gets Overlooked (And Why It Shouldn't)

Image
Most people don't think about emergency lighting until the power cuts out and they're standing in a stairwell they can barely see. That's the whole point of it, really; it's not there for the good days; it's there for the one bad day when everything else goes dark. Yet emergency lighting is still surprisingly easy to overlook. It can sit somewhere near the bottom of a building owner's maintenance list, below fire alarms, extinguishers, and other safety equipment. But when an emergency happens, those lights can be just as important. What Happens When the Lights Go Out? Imagine a busy office, shop, warehouse, or commercial building suddenly losing power. People may know where the exits are, but finding them in complete darkness is another matter. Emergency lighting is designed to come on when the normal power supply fails. It illuminates escape routes, stairways, corridors, and exit points, giving people a clear indication of where to go. In a time of stress, havi...
