SWA Glands in Ireland: Choosing the Right Glands for Armoured Cable

When working on an electrical installation, it is often the smaller components that can cause the biggest headaches when they are overlooked. SWA glands are a good example. They may not be as noticeable as the cable itself, but they play an important role when steel wire armoured cable needs to be terminated safely and securely.

For electricians, contractors, installers and trade customers looking for SWA glands in Ireland, choosing the right gland is about more than simply finding one that fits. The cable size, armour dimensions, installation location and environmental conditions all need to be considered before making a decision.

What Are SWA Glands?

SWA glands are designed specifically for terminating steel wire armoured cable. They provide a secure connection between the cable and equipment, enclosures or other electrical components while also accommodating the steel wire armour.

There are several types of SWA glands available, with BW and CW glands being two commonly used options. The right choice depends largely on where and how the cable will be installed.

For example, BW glands are commonly associated with indoor installations, while CW glands are often selected for applications where additional protection against moisture and external conditions is required. However, the manufacturer’s specifications should always be checked before choosing a product.

Getting the sizing right is equally important. The stated cable cross-sectional area alone does not always provide enough information. The cable’s overall diameter, armour size and the gland’s specified acceptance range should all be checked.

Why Is SWA Armoured Cable So Popular?

  • SWA armoured cable in Ireland is widely used because it offers additional mechanical protection compared with many standard cable types. The steel wire armour helps protect the cable against physical damage, making it suitable for demanding electrical installations.
  • It can be found in commercial buildings, industrial environments, external installations and applications where cables may be exposed to knocks or other physical risks.
  • However, the cable is only one part of the installation. The termination also needs careful consideration. Depending on the application, suitable glands, locknuts, earth tags and other accessories may be required.
  • Choosing compatible components helps ensure that the complete installation works as intended. Manufacturer instructions and applicable electrical requirements should always be followed by qualified professionals.

How Do You Choose the Correct SWA Gland?

Choosing a gland should start with the cable rather than the product shelf. Before ordering, check the manufacturer’s cable specifications and compare them with the gland’s sizing information.

A gland that is too small may be difficult to install correctly, while one that is too large may not provide the required grip around the cable. Either situation can create unnecessary problems during installation.

The location also matters. An indoor cable termination may have different requirements from one installed outside or in an area exposed to moisture, dust or changing weather conditions.

Taking a few minutes to check these details before starting work can save considerable time later. It also reduces the risk of having to stop an installation because the required accessories do not match the cable.

Don’t Forget the Complete Installation

When sourcing SWA glands in Ireland, it is easy to concentrate on the gland itself and forget about the other components needed to complete the termination.

Planning the installation as a whole is a better approach. Check the cable, gland and associated accessories together before work begins. This is particularly useful for larger commercial or industrial projects where a missing component can cause delays and unnecessary trips back to the supplier.

Reliable electrical supplies can make a noticeable difference to an installation. Having suitable products available when they are needed helps electricians and contractors keep work moving without avoidable interruptions.

What Most People Get Wrong About LED Downlights in Irish Homes

Image
So, whether you’re working on building an extension, renovating a 90s bungalow, or updating your kitchen, downlights will probably be among the first things you choose for your ceiling. They provide even light and a clear-line appearance and create an instant modern feel in the room. Nonetheless, installing LED downlights in Ireland is not simply about choosing the most aesthetically pleasing fascia colour or making holes in the plasterboard. Between rigorous Irish construction regulations, fire safety requirements, and insulation bridging in cold lofts, making incorrect decisions can lead to drafts, sound leaks, or failing inspection of the building. Here is what you need to look for to ensure your ceiling lighting is safe, compliant, and built to last. 1. Fire-Rated vs. Standard Downlights When you cut a hole in a ceiling to install a downlight, you compromise the integrity of the plasterboard, which acts as a natural fire barrier between floors. Standard open-back downlights allow...

Why Emergency Lighting Still Gets Overlooked (And Why It Shouldn't)

Image
Most people don't think about emergency lighting until the power cuts out and they're standing in a stairwell they can barely see. That's the whole point of it, really; it's not there for the good days; it's there for the one bad day when everything else goes dark. Yet emergency lighting is still surprisingly easy to overlook. It can sit somewhere near the bottom of a building owner's maintenance list, below fire alarms, extinguishers, and other safety equipment. But when an emergency happens, those lights can be just as important. What Happens When the Lights Go Out? Imagine a busy office, shop, warehouse, or commercial building suddenly losing power. People may know where the exits are, but finding them in complete darkness is another matter. Emergency lighting is designed to come on when the normal power supply fails. It illuminates escape routes, stairways, corridors, and exit points, giving people a clear indication of where to go. In a time of stress, havi...
